Week In Review (February 18 – 24, 2013)

Hello, friends!  I’m writing this as I rest post race at Walt Disney World with an ice pack on my left knee and two new shiny metals glittering on the nightstand next to me.  It’s been one heck of a busy week for this busy bee, but also one filled with many accomplishments (or personal triumphs, as I like to call them).  I’m so happy to be able to share my thoughts on the past week with you.  Your continuous support never ceases to amaze me!

Cramming It All In Before WDW

I mentioned I’ve been even busier this week than usual.  That’s because I did a whole lot of filming, editing, uploading, and scheduling to cover my three YouTube channels while I’m away.  I knew I didn’t want to leave a ten day gap with no content whatsoever and it turned out to be quite the feat to get all I had planned ready before my departure.  I am proud to say I managed to complete seven videos in advance to publish on YouTube while I’m away – one on OLJ, one on MHWL, and five on TBBB.   Doing this while keeping up with my regular content posting made for a week’s worth of early wake up calls, but it was worth it.  I actually met all of my deadlines before we left on Thursday for our trip.  That’s always such a good feeling!

Growing Braver in New Social Situations

As some if you may know, I suffer from social anxiety, which makes personal encounters challenging for me, especially when I’m meeting people I don’t know.  I’ve been doing a lot of growing and changing in this area for the past couple of years.  I receive frequent requests to host meet-ups where you guys can come meet me.  Just the thought of it completely terrified me up until recently.  After a botched attempt at piecing together a meet-up at the Tinker Bell Half Marathon last month, I decided I was ready to actually give it a real chance.  I committed to a bonafide meet-up at the race expo on Saturday with an exact time and location.  No backing out of that one (which was the point)!

I actually met one nice family at the Magic Kingdom on our first night here and was shocked that someone recognized me in the crowd!  (They actually were able to identify us due to Don’s “distinguishable head.” ;) ) A couple of people found me at the race expo on Friday (which was an absolute zoo!), too.  I was a complete ball of nerves for the latter half of the week leading up to the meet-up, but luckily I had Don’s hand to hold, which is always helpful.  I really didn’t have anything to worry about, because everyone I’ve met so far has been incredibly sweet.  I met ten people at the meet-up, which far exceeded my expectations.  Thanks to all who came to visit me!  I also met about five more people who recognized me during the race this morning.  All in all I had an extremely positive experience this weekend meeting new people.  It was such a pleasure to meet you all!  Please feel free to come up and introduce yourself if you ever see me somewhere in the future.

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going

This crazy week culminated in the Princess Half Marathon, which took place this morning.  O.M.G.  It did not go quite as I had hoped, but proved to be one of those real life learning moments.  Sometimes life throws you curveballs and you just have to deal with them, no matter how big or small.  I was coasting for the first four miles, feeling really solid and strong. Suddenly the outside of my left knee started to twinge.  By mile six I could barely keep up a steady run.  I resorted to a strange walk/run/shuffle combination until mile eight when the pain was so great I had to stop running altogether. Fortunately I was able to walk pretty fast without too much pain.

I had to really battle with myself and my expectations to come to terms with the situation.  First I was upset that I couldn’t run the way I wanted to.  My lower legs felt solid and my lungs and heart were strong, but my left knee just couldn’t deal with the impact, even at a shuffle.  I managed to let go of my disappointment and moved on to sheer determination to will myself through the last five miles of walking.  By mile eleven I had started to really hurt again, but gritted through it because I was just so darn close.  Once mile twelve rolled around, I had entered Epcot for the final leg of the race.  At this point I was filled with a sense of euphoria and walked the whole last mile with a huge grin from ear to ear.  I managed to hobble over the finish line, finishing in just under three hours.  Not only did I earn my beautiful Princess bling, I also picked up the Coast To Coast medal, an honor awarded to those who complete a Disney half or full marathon on both coasts in the same calendar year.

I can’t bend my left knee right now and I’m uncertain how serious this injury is just yet, but I am ecstatic nonetheless.   I think the race means even more to me since I had to overcome this unexpected hurdle.  I know it’s not the worst thing to happen to a person in the grand scheme of things.  I am just so grateful that I was able to deal with the loss of my race expectations and set new goals on the spot.  This is definitely a personal triumph for me in itself.  Finishing the race with two new medals to add to my growing collection is just the icing on the cake.  What a way to celebrate turning thirty!  What can I do at thirty-one to top this? ;)

This week was all about personal triumphs for me.  The thing is, it’s not easy to get there, but once you do it is more than worth the effort in my experience.  It’s all about the journey, friends, and I’m so happy to be able to share it with you.  What a week!  I hope you all had a great one.  If you’ve had any personal triumphs lately that you’d like to share, please do! ((HUGS))

** Knee Update – I started recovering very soon after ice, Advil, and a restful afternoon post race.  I am already able to bend the knee  and walk normally just one day later.  I can tell it will need a longer break from running, perhaps a couple of weeks.  I wanted to thank you guys for your kind words, congratulations, and well wishes for a speedy recovery.**

(FYI – the Internet situation at the hotel has been spotty at best, so please forgive me if it takes me some time to approve your comments and get posts up on WTZ for the next week.)

Mini Project: Bedside Table Drawer Organization

I am often asked how I find the motivation to start working on an organizational project when I’m feeling uninspired or out of practice.  My go-to organizational pick-me-up is to work on a mini project.  This usually involves a small, high traffic space, which is less time consuming to work on and yields immediate results.  Nothing inspires you to keep organizing quite like the success of a completed project, no matter how big or small.

I’ve been traveling quite a bit as of late, which has made it difficult to start any new organizing projects in the last few months.  I’ve been feeling the itch to get back into it, but some of the projects I’ve set my sights on are big ones that feel a bit daunting.  This is where the ever reliable mini project comes into play for me.  I decided to tackle my bedside table drawers, which were sorely in need of some organizational attention.

If you’d like to see how I organized these drawers from start to finish, watch my latest OLJ video below.

I’ve never put a drawer organization system in place in my bedside table before, so I had to start from scratch.  I knew I’d be turning to my favorite Linus Drawer Organizers by interdesign.  These come in both a deep and a shallow height as well as many variations on width and length.  I always have some on hand at any given time, since I tend to switch up the drawer organization in other areas of my house often.  They go on sale occasionally at The Container Store, which is a great time to stock up on drawer organization tools.

The Linus Drawer Organizers are constructed of sturdy plastic and are easy to wipe or wash out.  They also have rubber feet on the bottom to prevent slippage.  I like that they are clear, which not only makes it easy to identify their contents but also allows you to see the bottom of the drawer through them, which I find aesthetically pleasing.

OJ|OLJ 2:22:2013_2

I keep mainly lotions and other small miscellaneous nighttime necessities in the top drawer.

I purchased a few wider pieces to accommodate certain items I keep in my bedside table, such as journals, notepads, & lotions.  I used the shallow height for this project so that I could fit my lap desk on top of the organizers and still be able to close the drawer with ease.

OJ|OLJ 2:22:2013_3

I store journals, notebooks, pens, and bookmarks as well as my probiotics, Advil, and my Muscletrac roller in the lower drawer.

This mini project took me about half an hour to complete and didn’t cost very much, but yielded immediately beneficial results.  I use these drawers every single night and have been enjoying the convenience and neatness of their newly well organized state.  Not only did this mini project positively impact my everyday life, it did the trick in getting me motivated to tackle bigger projects.  I have one in particular in mind that I am really excited to finish work on after many years in the making when I return home from our travels.

I’d love to know how you motivate yourself when completing a task feels overwhelming for you.  Leave me a comment below if you care to share!

Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove

I’m excited to able to share a great new beauty product with you guys on the day it launches!  As many of you know, I have been a Sigma affiliate since this past summer.  I have enjoyed being a Sigma customer for several years now (I own and love many of their makeup brushes) and becoming an affiliate was a new and exciting opportunity offered to me.  I’ve enjoyed being able to share monthly discount codes with you.  Now I am sharing a product launch, something I never dreamed I would be doing!

OJ|TBBB 2:18:2013_1

*The makeup brush pictured is not included with the purchase of the Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove.*

I’ve recieved many requests over the past couple of year to share my makeup brush cleaning system with you.  I kept putting it off, because I felt like I didn’t really have anything new to share since there are so many wonderful makeup brush cleaning videos on YouTube from the beauty community already.  In fact, that’s how I picked up the tips that I incoporprated into my own brush cleaning routine – from YouTube videos!  Sigma sent me their new Brush Cleaning Glove to try out before the official launch date, which is today.  This was the push I needed to finally film my makeup brush deep cleaning system with you, because I am super excited about this cool new tool!

OJ|TBBB 2:18:2013_2

The glove has two parts – a removable microfiber liner (machine washable) and a high quality silicone outer layer that rinses clean.  I prefer this to using a sponge, which is how I’ve cleaned my makeup brushes for years.  The silicone material seems durable and well-made, which means it should last for a very long time.   Another plus is that it won’t harbor any residual makeup, soap, or bacteria like an ordinary sponge would.

OJ|TBBB 2:18:2013_3

The glove has two sides, one for face brushes and the other for eyes.  The different textures provides for a quick, easy, and thorough brush cleaning experience.  I’m never going back to using a sponge for cleaning brushes again!
OJ|TBBB 2:18:2013_4The glove comes in four colors (aqua, black, pink, or purple) and retails for $39.

OJ|TBBB 2:18:2013_5

If you apply the code BASE2013 at checkout you will receive 10% off your entire purchase.  Sigma always sends a free gift for purchases totaling over $30, so you’ll get that with your purchase of the Spa Brush Cleaning Glove as well!  Let me know if you decide to pick one up how you like it!

Week In Review (February 11 – 17, 2013)

Hello, friends!  Happy Sunday!  I’m back with my second Week In Review where I share some thoughts and feelings about the previous week with you.  Thanks for your support for last week’s post!  I really enjoy being able to share with you and it means a lot to me that you guys enjoy it, too. :)

Working On Time Management:

I’ve been concentrating specifically on time management recently in an effort to find the right balance between my internet life and my personal one.  I talked last week about realizing I can’t possibly achieve all I think I should be able to in one day and that realistically I can do about half of that.  I put this realization into play when making my daily to-do lists this past week and it’s feeling a lot more doable already.  I think this is the first step in really figuring out a good schedule that suits me at the moment.  I’ve been a busy litte bee trying to get some extra videos filmed, edited, and lined up for YouTube when I’m on vacation.  I think I’ve really put my time to good use and am feeling productive as opposed to overwhelmed by the end of the day, more often than not.  Of course, some days you just feel overwhelmed and that’s life, but I’m seeing a shift in the right direction for me.

Positively Polished, my new nail blog on Tumblr, is officially linked on OrganizedJen.com!

I’ve been enjoying my newest adventure, Positively Polished, my new nail blog on Tumblr, which has been up and running for over a week now.  I posted most every day to catch up on my January and February #POTM (Polish Of The Moment) photos.  Now that I’m caught up to current time I expect to post about twice a week on average with #POTMs, new polish launch info, and polish hauls.  If you enjoy all things nail polish you should check it out!

TBBB Welcomes Don’s Cook Nooks:

Don and I introduced his first Cook Nook video this past week on TBBB, featuring his Greek Style Chicken Burgers.  He makes this recipe for us about once every two or three weeks.  It’s one of our favorites of late!  I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already.  Don has a great cooking style, making tasty recipes with simple, clear instructions.  He’s a natural!

Yummy Greek Style Chicken Burgers!  Scary Jen faces!

I definitely felt the love this week with Don’s fabulous feast he prepared me for Valentine’s Day.  He actually filmed some of his cooking process (I wasn’t allowed in the kitchen since the meal was a surprise) and we showed all of the finished courses (he made seven!) on my MHWL vlog, Valentine’s Day Feast (February 14, 2013).  Between that and his first cook nook, Don received such a warm response from viewers he decided to open a YouTube account so that he could answer cooking related comments.  He ultimately chose DisorganizedDon to be his YouTube username, since, as he likes to say, it playfully shows how the two of us keep the universe in balance.  If you ever get a comment response from DisorganizedDon now you know it’s my cute husband being the sweetheart that he is!

Don’s fabulous Valentine’s Day feast!

Love Is In The Air:

I love Valentine’s Day, because I can go that extra mile to show my family how much I love them.  I honestly believe in sharing love openly, honestly, and without holding back each and every day.  Valentine’s Day just happens to be one of those special days of the year when I give extra tokens of my affection.  I usually send flowers to all of our grandparents and I like to hand deliver sweet treats, cards, & bouquets to our close by relatives.  In addition to a personal gift, I make a handmade Valentine for Don every year.  This annual Valentine making tradition also serves the purpose of reminding me how much I enjoy crafting and how I wish I made more time for it.  I find it very grounding to work with my hands on a focused activity such as making cards.  It’s a bit of a gift to myself every Valentine’s Day to set aside the time to make a card for my very sweet husband.

My Valentine for Don this year. I loved writing a tiny letter in tiny handwriting for the last page for his eyes only!

My Valentine for Don this year. I loved writing a tiny letter in tiny handwriting for the last page for his eyes only!

I am so blessed to be surrounded by such an amazing family, whom I get to spend quality time with on a regular basis.  We celebrated my MIL Suzanne’s birthday with a lovely family party yesterday at Don’s sister and her husband’s house.  Everyone pitched in, as we are wont to do, with the food, decorations, and party spirit to make the celebration a real group effort.  Don and I had brunch at my parent’s house this morning and then my Mom & I spent a lovely afternoon together downtown to see the Joffrey Ballet’s American Legends program.  It was amazing, just as I have come to expect from the Joffrey.  Nothing beats a weekend spent with my loved ones!

It’s definitely been a better week for me in terms of feeling prepared, productive, and happy with my life and my choices.  I’m very much looking forward to our upcoming Disney World trip and running in the Princess Half Marathon next Sunday!  I can’t wait to share our adventures with you, as always.  Thanks for sharing the love with me and making my Valentine’s Day and week all the more sweet! ❤

Mane Message

I’ve been a fan of soft elastic hairbands for about a year now.  Not only are these hairbands gentler on your hair than traditional store bought ones, they come in a wide variety of colors and are stretchy enough to wear on your wrist without cutting off your circulation.  I find that these hairbands stay put even in my super fine hair without putting as big of a dent in it (you know what I’m referring to – the dreaded ponytail dent!).

OJ|TBBB 2:13:2013_1

I first purchased a couple of Emi-Jay hairband sets about a year and a half ago after seeing their products on YouTube videos in the beauty guru community.  I instantly replaced all of my store bought hair ties and began wearing these handmade ones with the exception of my very small hairbands that I use when I’m wearing a braid.  Even though I wanted to use my new handmade hair ties for braids, they were simply too big for this type of hairdo with my hair.  I started poking around drugstores for less expensive versions and eventually found some at Target made by Remington.  Even though they cost less ($1.50 for a set of two as opposed to $11 plus S+H for a set of five from Emi-Jay), they are of lesser quality.  You get what you pay for!  The Remington hairbands are a similar concept, but I find they were not as soft as my Emi-Jay ones and don’t hold up as well in my hair.  Plus, they aren’t sized large enough for wrist wear, which is part of the appeal of this kind of hairband.  Even though they are smaller, the Remington hairbands are not the right size to secure my braid.

OJ|TBBB 2:13:2013_2

I was considering cutting up some of my hairbands to see if I could make smaller ones last December when Olivia, the owner and founder of Mane Message, sent an email my way.  Her Mom had turned her onto my YouTube videos last fall and she decided to reach out to me to see if I’d be interested in trying her hairbands.  I followed the link to her business webpage and saw that she carried a smaller size hairband.  Just what I was looking for!  Olivia graciously offered to send a selection of her products (including some regular, some mini, and a couple of headbands) to me, which she insisted I take as “a gift from a fan.”

OJ|TBBB 2:13:2013_7

I’ve been using Mane Message hair ties ever since (impeccable timing because my old Emi-Jay & Remington ones were in sore need of being replaced!) and absolutely love them!  They are comparable in quality to Emi-Jay hairbands, but are less expensive ($7 for a set of five solid color hair ties as opposed to $11 for a similar package from Emi-Jay) and come in beautiful tie dye prints as well.  Plus, Mane Message carries Mini Hair Ties, which are my personal favorite.  A few loops secures my braid perfectly!

OJ|TBBB 2:13:2013_8The tie dye hair bands are definitely my favorite.  They are soft, stretchy, and fit my wrist perfectly.  I can even loop the mini hair ties comfortably around my thumb when needed!

Olivia is a young business woman with a successful career she launched while in her junior year of college.  Since graduating, her company has blossomed into a full time career for her.  I encourage you to visit her website even if you’re not in the market for new hairbands.  It is a beautiful and organized webstore featuring her products.  If you are in the market for some new hairbands and would like to give Mane Message a try, Olivia has very kindly extended a discount code to OrganizedJen.com readers!  Apply code OrganizedJen15 at checkout to save 15% off your purchase now through March 15, 2013.

OJ|TBBB 2:13:2013_6

Olivia has also very kindly provided a couple of gift sets for a giveaway!  Two lucky readers will win both the Spring 2013 Pantone Package & the Boho Package (as shown in the above picture).  Follow the directions on the Rafflecopter widget below to be entered to win.  The giveaway is open international and will run until Sunday, February 17 at 6 PM CST.  There will be TWO winners.  I will contact the winners directly via email in addition to announcing them on Sunday night on this blog post.  Good luck!

Week In Review (February 4 – 10, 2013)

I’ve decided to try out a new weekly feature type of post on OrganizedJen.com every Sunday.  It’s a Week In Review of sorts, which will occasionally include photo recaps from Instagram.  The format might change from time to time, depending on what feels right on any given week.  I’m also considering delving into more personal things from time to time, in a Housewife Confessional kind of style, if you’re familiar with those videos on my MHWL channel.  So, let’s dive in!

Meeting Deadlines:

Being my own boss of sorts has been a real challenge for me.  I thrive under structure and have always been more of a follower than a leader.  One of the reasons I think I liked school so much is that it was the perfect framework for a busy bee like me.  Completing tasks by working through a curriculum set by teachers?  Right up my alley!  Now that I’m setting my own curriculum of sorts, becoming both the teacher and the student, I find myself getting frustrated more often.  I never realized how nice it was to have someone else in charge of setting how much is reasonable in terms of work to accomplish in any given time period.  With me in charge of myself, there are hugely high expectations and I am super hard on myself when I inevitably fall short of them.

I have been working very specifically in the last week on making more reasonable work goals for myself, especially where it concerns my day-to-day productivity   I have found that I can actually accomplish about half of what I think I can in a day.  Rather than get down on myself for not being able to do more, I am working on starting my day with a more reasonable number of tasks in mind.  This way I can actually meet my daily goals and end each day with a sense of accomplishment rather than failure.  Changing one’s natural tendencies is serious work in itself.  It’s going to be a long process, but definitely necessary for me in order to continue doing the things I love and enjoy doing them.  I genuinely love being an Original Content Creator and all it entails between filming & editing YouTube videos, writing blog posts here, posting on my two tumblr accounts, and interacting with you guys on Twitter and Facebook.  Trying not to spoil it by becoming a crazy and unreasonable boss of myself is a big priority.

Speaking of deadlines, I did manage to get my newest tumblr, Positively Polished, up and running.  I know it seems counterintuitive to add another thing to my plate right now and I’ve received quite a few comments questioning my reasoning behind it.  Having a little place on the web to post all of my #POTM (Polish Of The Moment) photos, nail polish hauls, and polish release information is something that I’ve wanted for a long time.  I’m big on posting different topics in different forums.  That’s just me.  A place for everything, you know?  Consider all of my internet content to be like my closet.  I have separate racks, bins, and shelves for the different kinds of items in my closet, just like I have various social media platforms for the different categories of content I put out on the world wide web.   To me it’s as simple as that.  I’m not trying to say that it’s for everyone.  It works for me so I go with it.  Do what you like.  Like what you do.

Running, Yoga, & Trying To Eat Healthy:

I’ve been very happy to be back to regular training between races.  I decided not to try for any big mileage days in order to avoid stressing out my legs too much in this short time I have before the Disney World Princess Half marathon (in TWO weeks!!).  I’ve been running between 3-6 miles about every other day on the indoor track at the gym thanks to the alternating icy/snowy/wet winter conditions outside lately.

Getting a good stretch post run is super important for me to stay healthy!

Getting a good stretch post run is super important for me to stay healthy!

I’ve enjoyed using the This Is Yoga DVD set that Don’s sister and her husband gave me for my birthday  along with my brand new Jade yoga mat on the days between running.  Tara Stiles is my yoga hero of late!  I feel so lucky to have found her DVDs since losing my favorite yoga teacher at the yoga studio I frequent last summer.  She only teaches in the city now, which makes it much harder to make it to her class.  Tara Stiles has been filling that yoga void ever since.  The practice is also much less labor intensive, which has been a necessary part of my half marathon training.  My at home practice with these DVDS (as well as the Daily Yoga one I mentioned in a previous post) has been the perfect amount of mild strengthening with a moderate stretch to keep me limber.  After my next race I might venture to try out new teachers at my yoga studio as there is nothing quite like practicing with others in a class setting.  For now between the at home yoga and my running I am feeling very strong.

Trying to eat healthy, however, has been a real struggle these past few months.  I find I typically have a hard time finding the right balance again after the holidays, especially with all of the travelling we’ve been doing.  Historically, March is when I get my eating really back in gear.  I suppose it’s because spring is finally on the horizon and I start craving lighter fare naturally.  Don and I have been eating a lot of homemade chicken soup lately (and yes, we will be posting a Cook Nook video on TBBB sharing that recipe soon).  It’s been our go-to meal between the holidays and traveling to keep ourselves in check this winter.

My biggest problem is not about eating healthy meals, but reducing my sweets intake.  The holidays always suck me back into very bad habits and I find it’s such a struggle to get back on track with that specifically.  Sugar is so addictive!  This week is the first since the holidays that I’ve felt like I have a real handle on the situation again.  I like to allow for a couple of treat allowances per week and try to steer clear of sweets on the days in between.   Seeing all of the delectables out for Valentine’s Day is definitely tempting, but so far I’ve been able to resist (with the exception of Tuesday Treat Day, which is when I typically indulge in a cupcake).

Personal Growth:

Honestly, it hasn’t been the best week ever emotionally speaking for me.  Putting yourself out there on the internet for the world to see definitely opens the door for unmitigated criticism.  I am super sensitive in my non-internet life.  It continues to surprise me that I am able to manage the negativity that comes with being a public person of sorts.  I haven’t quite put my finger on the reasoning behind it, but I find I am much more resilient in my internet life.  This has been filtering more and more into my personal life with time as well.  I strongly believe that being on YouTube and interacting with people via the internet has helped me to grow as an individual.  I feel like I’ve found my niche in this world, which is another constant surprise to me.  If three years ago you would have told me I’d be doing what I do now, I would have laughed in disbelief and shrugged it off as impossible.  I am a true-blue introvert (still am) and was an intensely private person up until I found YouTube.  For some reason talking to a camera comes naturally to me whereas talking to people in person absolutely does not.  From what I gather, this is what the majority of my viewers like best about my videos.  You guys tell me constantly how it feels like you’re sitting down with a friend when you watch my videos.  I love that!  I don’t have many friends in my personal life, which is something I might touch upon in more depth at a future time.  Since finding YouTube, I have received the gift of friendship many times over by connecting with viewers all over the world.  You are all very real friends to me and for that I am extremely grateful.

Of course, not all of my viewers have such positive opinions of me.  I’ve never been one to expect or wish for everyone to like me all of the time.  On the contrary, I think it’s perfectly natural not to like certain people.  I don’t think you really have to have a reason either.  Some people just rub you the wrong way, you know?  I can absolutely rub people the wrong way and that’s perfectly fine by me.  That’s just the way we work as humans.  Why people would subject themselves to watching a video of someone they don’t like, however, is something I’ll never understand, but to each their own, right?  Some people are more vocal than others about their dislike of me.  It seems like periods of greater negativity come in waves.  The past couple of weeks have felt like that to me.  Most of the time I can see and accept the criticism and negativity, let it go, and then move on.  It’s during big waves like these that I can get a bit bogged down by it.  I try to find something constructive out of these comments if available that can help me to learn and grow as a person.  When I’m in the wave there’s usually a big thing or two I need to work through emotionally.  This has happened several times during the past year and I’ve always come out feeling stronger and more sure of myself than before.  Nothing good comes easy, though, and there’s a lot of working through things that has to happen before the growth can occur.  I feel like the wave is tapering off now and I can see a new path once again before me.  This is such an adventure for me and no good adventure is without its moments of turmoil.

Of course, it is extremely helpful that the majority of my viewers are incredible supportive and enthusiastic about what I do.  I am grateful every day for the encouragement you guys give me.  Big ((HUGS)) all around! :)

Winter is best when I have my Winnie to share the glorious outdoors with!

Winter is best when I have my Winnie to share the glorious outdoors with!

I’m ending this week in review feeling more grateful than anything else.  Love is what it’s all about.  I get to share with people in a way I never dreamed possible.  I have an incredibly supportive family and the best husband on the planet, not to mention the sweetest pup ever, all of who love me with a fierceness that is impossible to deny.  I am a happy girl even during periods of stress and personal challenges, because I love me for me.  I feel so blessed for all of the love in my life.  Thank you for being a part of that! I love you all

My Travel Toiletries (Winter 2013 Update)

I’ve receieved many requests lately to give an updated look at my toiletry cases and their contents.  I posted a video on OLJ showing all of these things (you can find the video at the bottom of this post if you missed it), but I thought I would give a look at just the cases and a few other toiletry organization tools I use when packing.  Each photo is linked to the website where you can find what is pictured in case you’d like to pick up some of these for yourself.

I pack not only my own toiletries, but my husband’s as well.  I like using this Eagle Creek Pack-It® Quicktrip case for him.  It is made of the same high quality, lightweight nylon material as the other items in the Pack-It® line, including my favorite Pack-It® cubes.  It’s the perfect size to house all of Don’s toiletry needs for any given trip.  There are two exterior pockets, which I use to separate his hair comb and razor from the main compartment contents   The case fits nicely in all of our luggage.  It is simple yet effective.

I require several more toiletry items, being the girly girl that I am and someone with a generally more elaborate personal hygiene routine.  I travel with what makes me feel the most comfortable, which is not necessarily the same for everyone (as you can tell by the disparity between my husband’s toiletry needs and my own).  I like to keep most of my toiletry items in their cases upon arrival to our destination, because I have so many small containers and items.  It helps to keep the hotel bathroom neat and uncluttered.

I love my Kate Spade Large Natalie case.  It is sturdy, water resistant on both the inside and the outside, and can hold quite a few products while still fitting nicely on most hotel bathroom counters.  It also comes with a smaller size matching case that fits inside of it.  This case is quite pricey ($148) usually.  I was lucky to find mine on clearance last winter.

I have quite a few skincare products that I travel with, which I prefer to keep together in a separate case.  I’ve been using the Purse Size Terry Bag from Glitzy Glam for the past few years for this very purpose with great results.  It’s the perfect size to house my travel-size skincare (mostly Origins products, if you’re curious!).  The inside is lined in a water resistant plastic, which is easy to wipe down and contains any leaks.   It has a handy slip pocket where I secure my travel makeup wipes.  I usually park this case right next to my Kate Spade Natalie on the hotel bathroom counter when we travel.

I like to have the travel-size versions of my toiletry staples whenever they’re available for purchase.  After I use something up, I will simply refill the bottle from my full sizer version.  There are some products I use which are not available in travel size versions.  I have a nice selection of travel bottles I’ve purchased from The Container Store over the years that do the trick nicely.  They are easy to rinse out and reuse over and over again.

The Container Store has a nice selection of other kinds of travel toiletry organizational items, including these toothbrush covers.

Medium Cosmetic & Small Cosmetic from Vera Bradley (photo source)

Medium Cosmetic (photo source) & Small Cosmetic (photo source) from Vera Bradley

I really like Vera Bradley cosmetic cases for my additional toiletry needs.  They comes in three sizes, are lightly padded thanks to the quilted design, and are lined in a water resistant plastic.  I use the medium size for the items I bring on a trip specifically for the shower.  I usually unpack these items, leave them in the shower, and store the empty case in my luggage until it’s time to go home.  I also use two of the small cases on any given trip.  One holds my Clarisonic Mia face brush & power cord perfectly.  I keep my bedtime necessities, such as cuticle cream, hand & foot moisturizer, and lip balm in the other.

Recently I started packing my hair accessories in a separate case.  I like using the Essentials Cosmetic from Vera Bradley for this.  It has three compartments to easily separate my different hair accessories.  It’s super lightweight thanks to Vera Bradley’s beautiful quilted fabric, and folds pretty flat, which makes it super easy to pack and tuck into an out of the way corner of the hotel bathroom.  I usually only bring this case on longer trips.

Another case that I occasionally travel with is the Mini Hanging Organizer from Vera Bradley.  I like to paint my own nails and usually travel with polish.  This case fits all of my self manicure needs perfectly for on the go!  I love the clear, plastic compartments to house all of my different nail care items.  The larger pouch at the bottom can hold quite a few nail polish bottles.  I usually put each polish bottle in a small size zip top bag (I’ve purchased these at Michael’s in the past) as an additional precaution from possible leaks during travel.  I have had a top coat leak in the case before and it still looks good as new!

* Sadly, it looks like Vera Bradley is discontinuing the Mini Organizer, as I could only find it in one pattern in the sale section and it is sold out online.  I recommend calling your local Vera Bradley boutique to see if they have any in stock if you’re interested. *

Cosmetic Clutch from The Container Store (photo source)

The last of my many toiletry cases is the Cosmetic Clutch from The Container Store.  I only travel with this one when we’re going to be spending some time by the pool or beach.  I have a duplicate of this case for my beach bag at home.  It is the perfect size to hold several bottles of sunscreen, leave-in conditioner, a brush & comb, as well as my other pool/beachside must haves.  I like how sturdy it is, that it’s water resistant, and clear for easy identification of its contents.

As you can see, I prefer to have a place (or case!) for everything even when I travel.  You need to sort out what your personal travel needs are and what packing methods work for you.  I’d love to know what your favorite toiletry cases are if you care to share!

Count Me Healthy

I decided long before my blog launched that I would include product reviews on what I find “buzzworthy.”  This can range from a large variety of products, including beauty and fashion items as well as household finds and creative accessories (any product reviews I post related to organization will be filed under the OLJ parent category).  I’d like OrganizedJen.com to be a positive place, which is why I will be focusing on positive reviews (hence the “buzzworthy” label).  These will include products I’ve discovered that I’d like to share with you, because I genuinely enjoy using them.

OJ|TBBB 2:3:2013_2For my first buzzworthy find, I’d like to talk about Count Me Healthy bracelets.  I first came across these beauties in a photo Elle Fowler posted on her blog, Elle&Blair, last June.  I was immediately smitten, but the high price tag deterred me from making a purchase right away.  These bracelets are high quality jewelry.  As stated on the Count Me Healthy website under the FAQ section:

The sterling bracelet is made of sterling silver beads and a sterling silver-plated cuff with a white copper base. The yellow gold is 14k gold-dipped over sterling beads and a white copper cuff. The rose gold is 18k rose gold-dipped with a white copper cuff. The cuff is plated to withstand the daily bending.”

I spent some time perusing the website and decided that I would put aside some money for the Sexy Stack, which includes one of each shade metal.  I even pinned this set to share my new find with you.  The company was hosting a special 30% discount on all orders on Cyber Monday (November 26, 2012), which made the set I had my eye on much more affordable.  I received my new bracelets within a week of ordering and have been in love with them ever since.

OJ|TBBB 2:3:2013_3I love having one of each metal shade.  I usually wear one color at a time to match the other jewelry I’m wearing on any given day.  They are also pretty worn all together or with just two out of the three shades.  I like to combine them with my other favorite cuff style bracelets from The Current Custom.

OJ|TBBB 2:3:2013_4Not only are the bracelets absolutely gorgeous, but I love the concept behind them.  The little beads on the bracelets can be pushed around as a means to count towards healthy goals such as weight loss, healthy eating, positive thinking, etc.  You can also use them to help quit bad habits.

OJ|TBBB 2:3:2013_1I personally struggle with water consumption.  I don’t drink nearly enough on any given day and I have a bad habit of trying to make up for it by drinking a lot of water right before bed.  It’s better to space your water consumption out evenly throughout the day.  I use my Count Me Healthy bracelets to aid in this.

The website has some great suggestions on how to use your Count Me Healthy bracelets.  They suggest using the jump-ring in the middle to push beads from one side of the bracelet to the other to count goal achievements.

OJ|TBBB 2:3:2013_5I use the bracelets in a slightly different way than the one suggested.  Since I mostly drink water out of a 22 ounce glass water bottle (by Lifefactory), I decided to count my water intake by half bottle increments.  I designate two beads to count for one half bottle (or 11 ounces) of water consumed.  I roughly aim to drink 60 ounces of water every day.  There are twelve beads on each bracelet, therefore, counting two beads for one half bottle of water for the entire bracelet adds up to a total of 66 ounces of water over the course of one day.  Instead of pushing the beads over the jump-ring in the middle, I keep them evenly spaced out and then push two beads together for one half bottle of water consumed.  I use the jump-ring to separate the AM from the PM so that I’m aware of spacing out my water consumption more evenly throughout the day.  I aim to have consumed 33 ounces of water by midday and the other 33 ounces by bedtime.  This method works well for my personal goals and I like having the beads spaced more evenly as I find it more aesthetically pleasing.  I love how you can customize this practical jewelry to suit your own needs.
