a Rafflecopter giveaway

I’m still deciding if I am going to be using my blog and Rafflecopter for all giveaways from now on instead of the usual video comment giveaway.  I prefer this way because it seems more fair (no spamming comments) and it’s easier for me to keep track of.  It’s possible I’ll occasionally host a video comment giveaway, but I’m leaning towards for Rafflecopter/Blog route for the time being.

Sometimes Rafflecopter experiences technical difficulties.  If you can’t enter for some reason, try again later and it will probably work.

Sigma Defining Eyes Palette

I’ve been enjoying pairing videos with blog posts for my organizational topics lately and decided it might be fun to do so with some of my other types of topics as well.  I featured the Sigma Defining Eyes Palette in my most recent Current Look video on TBBB.  It’s kind of hard to see the palette up close in the video so I took some photos to supplement.OJ|TBBB 4:12:2013_1The palette includes eight neutral based eye shadows, ranging from lighter highlighters to warm browns and cooler toned shades to create a smoky affect.

There are also two gel liners, one black and the other brown, as well as a dual-ended eyeliner pencil with a brightening white and a vivid sapphire blue.  The palette also includes a dual-ended brush, including an E55 Eye Shading side and an E30 Pencil side.

OJ|TBBB 4:12:2013_2I’ve been using the more neutral shades in this palette as well as the brown gel liner for my go-to look recently.  If you decide you’d like top pick up this palette, you can receive 10% off your entire purchase by entering the code AAM2013 during checkout (good from April 1 – April 30, 2013).  Sigma will also send a free gift with any purchase over $30, which right now is a travel size E05 Eye Liner brush.

Check out the video (shown before) where I walk you though my current look.  There’s also information about a giveaway at the end of the video!  (FYI – You must leave a comment on the video’s webpage to be entered to win in the giveaway.)

I’m considering hosting the majority of my giveaways on my blog from now on instead of through comment entries on my videos.  I feel like it will be easier for me to keep track of entries and will allow people to make personal comments on my videos without the interference of a giveaway.  If I chose to do this, I will always announce the giveaway in the video and of course link to the blog post in the more info bar on the video page for easy entry.  I’m interested in your opinion, as always.  Leave a comment if you’d like!  Thanks  :)

*I am a Sigma affiliate, which means I earn a commission from any sales made from the links I provide.  The Sigma eyeshadow base and coordinating brush shown in the video were sent to me for consideration.  I purchased all other Sigma products shown.  This is not a sponsored video.  All opinions are my own.*

My Morning Skincare Routine

For the second installment of my updated skincare regimen on TBBB, I am discussing my morning skincare routine.  Check My Nighttime Skincare Routine post if you missed it for product details and the accompanying video.

Origins Checks & Balances Frothy Face Wash (photo source), Origins United State Balancing Tonic (photo source), Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense Skin Guardian (photo source)

Origins Checks & Balances Frothy Face Wash (photo source), Origins United State Balancing Tonic (photo source), Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense Skin Guardian (photo source)

I like to cleanse and tone my face right after I wake up in the morning.  Not only is it refreshing but it prepares my skin for the day ahead.  I turn to the trusty Origins line in the morning just as with my nighttime routine.  I start by cleansing with Origin’s Check & Balances Frothy Face Wash.  I think of this cleanser as “toothpaste for the face,” due to its appearance, slightly minty scent, and its ability to make my skin feel so clean and refreshed.  I follow up with Origin’s United State Balancing Tonic, which I apply in a light, sweeping motion using Shiseido Facial Cottons.  After briefly fanning my face to allow the toner to set, I apply a light layer of A Perfect World Age-Defense Skin Guardian as my morning serum to my face, neck, and décolletage (I finally figured out that word!).

Origins Starting Over Age-Erasing Eye Cream (photo source) & Origins Starting Over Age-Erasing Moisturizer (photo source)

Origins Starting Over Age-Erasing Eye Cream (photo source) & Origins Starting Over Age-Erasing Moisturizer (photo source)

I follow up the serum with moisturizers.  I prefer using lightweight moisturizers in the morning, but I still enjoy products that effectively penetrate and hydrate the skin without sitting on top of it.  I’ve been using the Origins Starting Over Age-Erasing Eye Cream for several years now in the morning with great results.  I like using the Starting Over Age-Erasing Moisturizer in the late fall, winter, and early spring months.

Origins Plantscription SPG 25 Anti-Aging Oil-Free Cream

Origins Plantscription SPG 25 Anti-Aging Oil-Free Cream (photo source)

I like to switch to oil-free moisturizers with sun protection for the late spring, summer, and early fall months.  I’m looking forward to trying out Origin’s newest moisturizer, the Plantscription SPF 25 Anti-Aging Oil-Free Cream* as we transition to late spring.

Dior Creme de Rose Smoothing Plumping Lip Balm (photo source) & Rosebud Salve In A Tube (photo source)

Dior Creme de Rose Smoothing Plumping Lip Balm (photo source) & Rosebud Perfume Co. Rosebud Salve In A Tube (photo source)

I take care of my lips as part of my overall skincare regimen.  In the morning I choose between one of two lip products.  I use the Dior Creme de Rose Lip Balm if I am going to be heading outside directly for a walk or run because it has SPF 10.  If I’m not going to be heading out immediately, I apply the Rosebud Salve in a Tube.  Both of these lip products are a bit on the heavier side, but sink in nicely and are effective moisturizers first thing in the morning.

Origins No Puffery Cooling Mask for Puffy Eyes (photo source) & LUSH Ocean Salt Face & Body Scrub (photo source)

Origins No Puffery Cooling Mask for Puffy Eyes (photo source) & LUSH Ocean Salt Face & Body Scrub (photo source)

There are a few additional skincare products I thought I’d mention that I don’t use every day, but are still an important part of my skincare collection.  I use Origins No Puffery to combat puffy eyes.  A light layer of this around the eye area does the trick.  I apply it after serum, let it dry completely, and then follow up with eye cream and moisturizer.  I keep a tub of LUSH’s Ocean Salt in my shower for the occasional exfoliation.  A little bit of this applied with extremely gentle pressure is all I need for a refreshing scrub.  I use Ocean Salt about twice a week.

Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream (photo source) & Origins VitaZing SPF 15 Energy-Boosting Moisturizer (photo source)

Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream (photo source) & Origins VitaZing SPF 15 Energy-Boosting Moisturizer (photo source)

These last two skincare products aren’t necessarily part of my first-thing-in-the-morning skincare routine, but I wanted to include them because they are part of my overall skincare arsenal.  They also just happen to be two of my all time favorite Origins products.  I generally do a cardio workout first thing in the morning (after my morning skincare routine) and then follow up with a cross or strength training workout later in the morning.  I shower after this second workout.  I like to moisturize my skin after being in the shower.  The GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream has a light consistency with a highlighting effect.  If you’ve watched any of my beauty-related videos, you probably already know that I absolutely love Origin’s VitaZing.  I consider this to be a part skincare, part makeup product.  It acts as a nice daytime moisturizer that works on my skin year round.  I appreciate that it has SPF 15 for sun protection.  The best thing about VitaZing, however, is how it evens out my skin tone so well.  I rarely feel the need to apply any foundation or tinted face products other than a bit of powder after applying this moisturizer.

Origins was kind enough to send me five VitaZing moisturizers to give away.  Details for how to enter to win are included at the end of My Morning Skincare Routine video (shown below).

** If you’d like to be entered into the giveaway, you must leave your comment on the video’s webpage.  You can get to the webpage by clicking on the title on the top left corner of video shown below or visit TheBusyBeeBuzz channel page and select the video directly from there.  Comments left to this blog post will not be entered to win.**

My Nighttime Skincare Routine

I get a lot of questions about my skincare routines and decided an update was due on TBBB.  I split it up into two videos, one for my nighttime routine and the other for my morning one.  I’m including photos and links to all of the products I am currently using and loving in my nighttime skincare routine here.  Stay tuned for my morning skincare routine post, coming up next.

Shiseido The Makeup Facial Cotton (photo source), Lancome Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover (photo source), up&up Makeup Removing Cleaning Wipes (photo source)

Shiseido The Makeup Facial Cotton (photo source), Lancome Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover (photo source), up&up Makeup Removing Cleaning Wipes (photo source)

I start off my nighttime skincare routine by removing my makeup.  I don’t wear makeup every day, but on the days that I do, I use Shiseido Facial Cottons with Lancome Bi-Facil Eye Makeup Remover to neatly remove my eye makeup.  I purchase both of these from Sephora.  I love the up&up Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes from Target to remove any face makeup.  I do these steps before cleansing my skin.

Clarisonic Plus Sonic Skin Cleansing System (photo source), Origins A Perfect World Deep Cleanser with White Tea (photo source), Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense Treatment Lotion (photo source)

Clarisonic Plus Sonic Skin Cleansing System (photo source), Origins A Perfect World Deep Cleanser with White Tea (photo source), Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense Treatment Lotion (photo source)

I absolutely love Origins products, which I have been a loyal fan of for the past several years.  I like using the Origins A Perfect World Deep Cleanser to wash my face at night.  On the days I’ve worn makeup I use a Clarisonic Plus face brush to get a gentle deep clean.  This really works to get all of the makeup off my face.  You’d be surprise what comes off with the face brush even after using makeup remover!  I use the sensitive skin brush heads for my Clarisonic, which I typically replace every two to three months.  I’ve had my Clarisonic for several years now.  I originally purchased it from Ulta, but I’ve also seen it for sale at Sephora and department stores.  I follow up the cleanser with toner.  I use the Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense Treatment Lotion (which acts as a toner) and my favorite Shiseido Facial Cottons to apply this to my skin.

Lush Grease Lightning Tea Tree Cleanser (photo source) & Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Serum (photo source)

LUSH Grease Lightning Tea Tree Cleanser (photo source) & Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Serum (photo source)

I use LUSH’s Grease Lighting as a spot treatment for active breakouts and as a preventative measure on parts of my face that are prone to breakouts, such as my chin, upper lip, and forehead.  Tea Tree oil is a natural antibacterial agent that works great as an acne spot treatment.  I use a very small amount of this (a little goes a long way) and let it dry compltely before applying my nighttime serum, Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Serum.

Origins Eye Doctor Moisture Care for Skin Around Eyes (photo source) & Origins High-Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral-Enriched Renewal Cream (photo source)

Origins Eye Doctor Moisture Care for Skin Around Eyes (photo source) & Origins High-Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral-Enriched Renewal Cream (photo source)

I prefer to use thicker moisturizers at night.  Skin does most of its repairing while you sleep, which gives the products a chance to have a deeper effect.  I love Origin’s Eye Doctor and High-Potency Night-A-Mins, because they are rich creams that absorb nicely into the skin without feeling thick or oily on my face.

LUSH Mint Julips Lip Scrub (photo source) & Honey Trap Lip Balm (photo source)

LUSH Mint Julips Lip Scrub (photo source) & Honey Trap Lip Balm (photo source)

I consider taking care of my lips to be an important part of my skincare routine.  I like to exfoliate them every other night using LUSH’s Mint Julips Lip Scrub.  I follow up with the Honey Trap Lip Balm for a great overnight lip treatment that isn’t too thick or oily, but still has great staying power.  I use this on the nights I don’t exfoliate as well.

Bliss Steep Clean Mask (photo source) & Glitzy-Glam Waffle Weave Head Band (photo source)

Bliss Steep Clean Mask (photo source) & Glitzy-Glam Waffle Weave Head Band (photo source)

I use the Bliss Steep Clean Mask twice a week to keep my skin feeling soft and looking radiant.  I also want to mention the Glitzy-Glam Waffle Weave Head Bands, which I use throughout my entire skincare routine morning and night to keep my hair off my face and out of the way.

That’s all of the products I use for the nighttime skincare routine I’ve been following recently.  For more details about my routine, check out the video below.  Stay tuned for a post featuring my morning skincare routine products with a coordinating video.

I’m excited to be hosting an Origins Skincare Products Giveaway to accompany this post!  Origins was kind enough to reach out to me not too long ago after seeing my older skincare routine videos.  They loved how big of a fan I am of their line and asked if they could send me some products.  I am happy to be able to give away these four products they sent me to one of you!

First Look at Sigma’s Resort Palette

Before I get into the real focus of this post, I’d like to start off with a bit of a disclaimer.  Most of you probably already know that I am a Sigma Beauty affiliate and have been since the summer of 2012.  What that means is every time someone buys something using my affiliate link I receive a commission from that sale.  I like to point this out with some frequency, because I think it’s important to be very clear when it comes to affiliations or sponsors in the online social media business world.  That being said, I also like to emphasize how I try very hard not to allow my affiliate status affect my opinion of Sigma products.  I do genuinely like the majority of Sigma’s line or I wouldn’t have accepted their offer to become an affiliate in the first place.  I’ve had most of my Sigma brushes for a couple of years now and genuinely believe that they rival my other favorite MAC ones in quality and price.  As a Sigma affiliate I do receive some perks that I can share with you, such as monthly discount codes and first looks at new product launches.  Since I am not currently associated with any other company, Sigma is the only one I have the ability to share things like that with you.  I never want you to feel like I am trying to push things on you or really sell them.  I’m just sharing something I have access to and would do so with other products if I were able to.  When I give you a “first look” at something, it is different than a review because I haven’t had time to test the product and develop feelings towards it yet.  I hope this helps clarify these types of posts for you and gives you a good idea of my attitude towards affiliations in general.  Now, on with the post…

OJ|TBBB 3:18:2013_1Today, Sigma Beauty launched its Resort Limited Edition Makeup Palette, which includes eight eye shadows, one blush, one liquid highlighter, and one dual-ended eyeliner pencil.  The packaging is much smaller than more recent Sigma palette launches like the Defining Eyes and Paris palettes, which makes it easier to store and travel with.  As a frequent traveler, I think Sigma would benefit from making their packaging even sleeker in the future, but this one isn’t so bulky that I’d rule it out altogether.

OJ|TBBB 3:18:2013_2The eye shadows range from warm neutrals to bright “ocean-like hues” giving it a nice spectrum of colors that would work in a variety of summer settings.  You could definitely pull out a more subdued everyday look from this selection with plenty of choices for more fun color pops for nights on the town.

OJ|TBBB 3:18:2013_3 OJ|TBBB 3:18:2013_4In addition to the eight eye shadows, the palette also includes a blush, Heavenly, which is a gorgeous subdued coral.  I can’t wait to try that paired with the included liquid highlighter, Luminesce.  A dual-ended eyeliner pencil is also included in the palette, with a rich warm brown called Earth Goddess on one side and a bright blue called Daydream on the other.  The eyeliners fit in with the general workable theme of the palette by providing a more natural option as well as a fun  pop of color.

OJ|TBBB 3:18:2013_5 OJ|TBBB 3:18:2013_6I’ve enjoyed all of the Sigma eye shadows I’ve ever tried and find they offer nice pigmentation and even application.  I have yet to give this palette a try, but I think I will get a lot of use out of the more neutral tones as we move from winter to spring and add in the brighter colors when summer comes along.

OJ|TBBB 3:18:2013_7The Resort Palette retails for $42 is available now on the Sigma website.  Enter code SAVE2013 for 10% off your total purchase this month.  This discount code expires March 31, 2013.  Sigma includes a free gift with every purchase of $30 or more.  Check my Facebook Fan Page for updates on new monthly discount codes in the future.

Let me know if you’d be interested in seeing product swatches for these types of posts in the future.

MAC Archie’s Girls Haul

I ordered several items from MAC’s most recent themed collection, Archie’s Girls, right when it launched in early February 2013.  I actually received this haul in the mail a month ago, but kept putting off pulling together this blog post for some reason.  I still wanted to share my haul with you because I ended up ordering a few extra goodies for a corresponding giveaway.  More info on that in a bit!

I love how MAC split the collection into two, one side for Betty and the other for Veronica. I used to read the comic books you could buy at the grocery store when I was younger from time to time.  This is a great nostalgic collection with some fun colors!

OJ|TBBB 3:5:2013_1

I was most drawn to the blushes and beauty powders in this collection.  After reading reviews from my favorite beauty blogger, Temptalia, I decided to buy all four.  I think these will make great blushes for spring!  I purchased the Pearlmate Face Powders (the ones shown in the photo with the little hearts) in Veronica’s Blush (left)  & Flatter Me (right).  I think these will be nice light touch blushes with a bit of a sheen to them.  The actual powder blushes are Prom Princess (left) & Cream Soda (right).  They’re both very different, just like Veronica and Betty!

I also decided to pick up three of the collection’s lip products, including the Lipglass Lip Gloss in Strawberry, the Satin Lipstick in Betty Bright (left), and the Matte Lipstick in Ronnie Red (right).  I don’t own any lip shades quite like these so I thought they’d make a nice addition to my collection.  Plus, who can resist the too cute packaging?

I decided to pick up a few of these items for two of you to win in a blog giveaway as well.  MAC’s special edition launches sell out notoriously fast because of the hype surrounding them.  I figured it was best to pick up some extra goodies right after the launch while they were still available so that I could share with two of you!

OJ|TBBB 3:5:2013_2

So, what could you win?  There will be  TWO winners who will each win the Pearlmate Face Powder in Veronica’s Blush, the Matte Lipstick in Ronnie Red, and the Lipglass Lip Gloss in Strawberry Malt, as pictured above.  (I took a photo of my own personal products to show you.  The winners will win products that have not been removed from the boxes).

As usual, this giveaway is open internationally and there will be TWO winners.  If you are under the age of 18 you must have parental permission to participate.  This giveaway runs from now, March 5, 2013 until next Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 6 PM.  The winners will be announced on this blog post later that evening.  I will contact them directly as well.  I’m using Rafflecopter for this giveaway.  Follow the directions on the widget below to be entered to win.  Good luck!

Don’s Valentine’s Day Feast

It seems fitting that my first guest post on OrganizedJen.com is from my favorite person on the planet, my husband Don (now fondly known as DisorganizedDon on YouTube and Words With Friends).  Many of you requested links to recipes and more information about Don’s fantastic Valentine’s Day feast he prepared for me (as seen in my Valentine’s Day Feast (February 14. 2013) video on MHWL).  Don wrote up this blog post for those who are interested…

Valentine’s Follow Up (with recipes!) ~ By Don

I have to say I was completely overwhelmed by the response I received from everyone on the Valentine’s Day dinner I prepared for Jennifer.  I’m really not worthy of all of that praise, but thank you so much for all of the very kind words.  I had a lot of fun making that meal and being able to share it with so many people has made it even more special.

There was a request for all the recipes that I used for that menu, so I thought I would put them together along with some commentary on how I used them.  I was able to snap a few pictures of when I used the leftover meat and cheese balls to make a little snack for Jennifer and me the next Saturday, so we’re including those as well!

Course #1 – Cauliflower Soup

Pink Cauliflower Soup For Valentine’s Day (recipe source)

I couldn’t find purple cauliflower or purple potatoes, but I added one beet to my vegetable boil and I thought it gave the soup an absolutely perfect Valentine’s color.  My other substitution was half and half (from a cow) instead of the soy creamer.  Jen likes it spicy so my version had a little extra cayenne.  One warning: be careful with the apple cider vinegar.  The soup definitely needs some of it, but I recommend starting with 1 tablespoon and adding half increments from there to suit individual taste.

Course #2 – Caprese Salad

No recipe for this one.  Just copying my favorite restaurant presentations.

✽ Tomato – I found a gigantic organic heirloom at whole foods.
✽ Mozzarella – I found a nice looking ball at Whole Foods, but I wish I could find an even better and fresher one.
✽ Olive oil – Bionaturae EVOO never fails.
✽ Balsamic – Alessi 20-year-old VSOP was fantastic!
✽ Basil – The fresher the better!  The basil I found was only so-so.
✽ Salt – Use your favorite salt.

Mine was constructed this way: sliced tomato on the bottom, salted and drizzled with oil, followed by big leaves of basil and then the mozzarella slice cut in a heart shape.  Add more salt, another drizzle of olive oil, and then the balsamic on top.  Tasty!!

Course #3 – Salmon and Avocado Tartar

Soy Sesame Salmon Tartare with Avocado (recipe source)

You could tell from the video that I made the chopped up version served in a martini glass.  I omitted the scallions and the black sesame seeds, as well as the seven flavor chili pepper, just to keep things a little simpler for myself.  I started with salmon sashimi from Whole Foods.  I chopped it up along with avocado and a peeled and de-seeded cucumber, trying to get the right bite size pieces, and then I just focused on trying to get a good balance between the lime juice, soy sauce, and mirin.

Course #4 – Duo of Balls

Cocktail Meatballs (recipe source)

The meatball recipe and the ketchup came from Emeril via the Food Network.   I followed his recipe pretty closely except I didn’t add the essence seasoning.  I think next time I’ll try to take the time to do that: the more spice the better!  Still, they came out very flavorful.  Also, I didn’t cook them in the pan before baking on Valentine’s Day, but I did when I cooked up the extra ones on a couple of days later.  I think the pan-frying added a nice texture to the outside, so I highly recommend that technique.

I made the ketchup basically as Emeril directed.  Again, I advise caution with the amount of vinegar.  It’s an important ingredient, but just add it slowly.  Also, I used my handheld blender to make sure I got the onions and garlic fully incorporated which I think really helps blend the flavors.

Macaroni and Cheese Baked Balls (recipe source)

I followed these instructions and made my mac and cheese two days in advance.  I even added some extra cheese as suggested.  My mistake when I cooked these on Valentine’s Day was that I didn’t pack the noodles together hard enough when I formed the balls and I didn’t sufficiently saturate the exterior with the flour, egg wash, and bread crumb coating.  I did better on those points on Saturday and I think they came out much tastier.  Still, I was left wanting for a little more gooey cheesiness.  They did, however, pair very nicely with Emeril’s amped up ketchup.

Course #5 – Homemade Pasta with Vodka Cream Sauce

Vodka Cream Sauce (recipe source)

Homemade Pasta (recipe source)

This was the course I was most excited about and most scared about.  I knew the vodka cream sauce would be awesome and easy to make.  However, I’ve never made homemade pasta before so I had no idea if I’d be able to pull it off.  Lo and behold, I found a great step-by-step recipe online and the noodles came out great!

I followed the vodka cream sauce recipe pretty closely with the addition of adding some dried basil because I love basil (and Jen does too!).  I think I added a little too much tomato paste at the start, so I added some more cream at the end to balance out the tanginess.

For the pasta, I followed The Pioneer Woman’s instructions as carefully as I could.  Two eggs per cup of flour seemed like a great ratio.  I think I actually used a little less flour than that, as some was left behind in the bowl when I pulled it together into the ball.  I stored it in a bag for about three hours until it was time for course #5 when I rolled it out as thin as possible and cut it into thin strips with my chef’s knife.

Fortunately, I have picked up some proper pasta serving techniques from Scott Conant on Chopped and from Molto Mario, so I knew to have my big pot of salted boiling water at the ready.  I had also warmed the vodka cream sauce, which I’d prepared earlier, in a saucepan.  The fresh pasta went into the boiling water for just about 90 seconds.  I scooped it out with a strainer and dropped it right into the pan of sauce to finish cooking.  I tossed it with tongs in the saucepan for another 90 seconds or so before transferring to serving bowls and topping with freshly chopped basil.  Personally, this was my favorite dish of the night!

Course #6 – Filet with Mushrooms and Red Wine Sauce

I knew I wanted to do a filet with red wine sauce as the protein since Jen loves filet and red wine sauce would fit my color theme. I found this recipe pretty quickly and I thought the red wine sauce technique sounded solid.

Filet Mignon with Red Wine Sauce (recipe source)

I started thinking about the right veggie and mushrooms seemed like the perfect choice.  I searched around and found this recipe for a red wine sauce with mushrooms.

Perfect Tenderloin Steaks/Filets with Mushrooms (recipe source)

I loved the roasted garlic idea, but I didn’t want to be running outside to the grill and I knew I wanted to use my filet juices as part of the red wine pan sauce.  I roasted a couple heads of garlic earlier and just sort of made it up as I went along.  It actually turned out pretty fantastic, if I say so myself.  Please keep in mind that Jennifer and I are HUGE roasted garlic lovers so this might not be the right ratio for everyone. ;)

I added my 8 oz filet (room temperature, covered in salt and pepper) to hot oil in a large skillet and cooked for about twelve minutes total, turning the meat to get most of the sides since it is was basically a cube.  The filet came out of the pan at internal temp of 120˚at which point I tented it with foil.  Since I was just making one steak, I added just one cup of red wine (I used the Duckhorn cabernet we were drinking) to the pan and turned the heat up to high.   I added the mushrooms to my other skillet, which had already been heated with oil.  After about five minutes I added the two heads of roasted garlic that I had mashed earlier to the mushrooms.  Once the wine had reduced by 75%, I added a tablespoon of butter.  Once it was melted, I poured the wine into the mushroom pan.  Now I had achieved a double de-glazing: once to get all the crusty meaty goodness out of the first pan, and second to get all of the crusty garlicy and mushroomy goodness out of the second pan. I let the wine and mushrooms simmer on low heat for a minute while I sliced the filet and portioned it onto plates and then I poured the wine and mushrooms over the filet slices.  I couldn’t have been more pleased with how it turned out!

Course #7 – White Chocolate Mousse

White Chocolate Mousse (recipe source)

Jennifer has been really into white chocolate lately, so this was an easy idea to choose.  I liked the look of this Betty Crocker recipe, so I went with it.  I made a silly mistake of adding too much cream at first, but fortunately I figured it out before I got too far along and balanced it out with extra egg yolks.  Other than that, I followed this recipe to a T.  The only thing I did was add a few raspberries on top to meet my red color theme, and also because what’s better than raspberries and chocolate?  I was very pleased with the texture and flavor of the final product.  I can’t wait to try this recipe again, but with dark chocolate!

I’m pretty sure that Don is the sweetest man on the planet!  His Valentine’s Day efforts and creativity made the day so special for me.  I’m including the Valentine’s Day vlog below in case you missed it and would like to see the feast.

I’ve recieved many requests over the past couple of year to share my makeup brush cleaning system with you.  I kept putting it off, because I felt like I didn’t really have anything new to share since there are so many wonderful makeup brush cleaning videos on YouTube from the beauty community already.  In fact, that’s how I picked up the tips that I incoporprated into my own brush cleaning routine – from YouTube videos!  Sigma sent me their new Brush Cleaning Glove to try out before the official launch date, which is today.  This was the push I needed to finally film my makeup brush deep cleaning system with you, because I am super excited about this cool new tool!

The glove has two parts – a removable microfiber liner (machine washable) and a high quality silicone outer layer that rinses clean.  I prefer this to using a sponge, which is how I’ve cleaned my makeup brushes for years.  The silicone material seems durable and well-made, which means it should last for a very long time.   Another plus is that it won’t harbor any residual makeup, soap, or bacteria like an ordinary sponge would.

The glove has two sides, one for face brushes and the other for eyes.  The different textures provides for a quick, easy, and thorough brush cleaning experience.  I’m never going back to using a sponge for cleaning brushes again!
OJ|TBBB 2:18:2013_4The glove comes in four colors (aqua, black, pink, or purple) and retails for $39.

Mane Message

I’ve been a fan of soft elastic hairbands for about a year now.  Not only are these hairbands gentler on your hair than traditional store bought ones, they come in a wide variety of colors and are stretchy enough to wear on your wrist without cutting off your circulation.  I find that these hairbands stay put even in my super fine hair without putting as big of a dent in it (you know what I’m referring to – the dreaded ponytail dent!).

I first purchased a couple of Emi-Jay hairband sets about a year and a half ago after seeing their products on YouTube videos in the beauty guru community.  I instantly replaced all of my store bought hair ties and began wearing these handmade ones with the exception of my very small hairbands that I use when I’m wearing a braid.  Even though I wanted to use my new handmade hair ties for braids, they were simply too big for this type of hairdo with my hair.  I started poking around drugstores for less expensive versions and eventually found some at Target made by Remington.  Even though they cost less ($1.50 for a set of two as opposed to $11 plus S+H for a set of five from Emi-Jay), they are of lesser quality.  You get what you pay for!  The Remington hairbands are a similar concept, but I find they were not as soft as my Emi-Jay ones and don’t hold up as well in my hair.  Plus, they aren’t sized large enough for wrist wear, which is part of the appeal of this kind of hairband.  Even though they are smaller, the Remington hairbands are not the right size to secure my braid.

I was considering cutting up some of my hairbands to see if I could make smaller ones last December when Olivia, the owner and founder of Mane Message, sent an email my way.  Her Mom had turned her onto my YouTube videos last fall and she decided to reach out to me to see if I’d be interested in trying her hairbands.  I followed the link to her business webpage and saw that she carried a smaller size hairband.  Just what I was looking for!  Olivia graciously offered to send a selection of her products (including some regular, some mini, and a couple of headbands) to me, which she insisted I take as “a gift from a fan.”

I’ve been using Mane Message hair ties ever since (impeccable timing because my old Emi-Jay & Remington ones were in sore need of being replaced!) and absolutely love them!  They are comparable in quality to Emi-Jay hairbands, but are less expensive ($7 for a set of five solid color hair ties as opposed to $11 for a similar package from Emi-Jay) and come in beautiful tie dye prints as well.  Plus, Mane Message carries Mini Hair Ties, which are my personal favorite.  A few loops secures my braid perfectly!

OJ|TBBB 2:13:2013_8The tie dye hair bands are definitely my favorite.  They are soft, stretchy, and fit my wrist perfectly.  I can even loop the mini hair ties comfortably around my thumb when needed!

Olivia is a young business woman with a successful career she launched while in her junior year of college.  Since graduating, her company has blossomed into a full time career for her.  I encourage you to visit her website even if you’re not in the market for new hairbands.  It is a beautiful and organized webstore featuring her products.  If you are in the market for some new hairbands and would like to give Mane Message a try, Olivia has very kindly extended a discount code to OrganizedJen.com readers!  Apply code OrganizedJen15 at checkout to save 15% off your purchase now through March 15, 2013.
