I’ve been a fan of soft elastic hairbands for about a year now. Not only are these hairbands gentler on your hair than traditional store bought ones, they come in a wide variety of colors and are stretchy enough to wear on your wrist without cutting off your circulation. I find that these hairbands stay put even in my super fine hair without putting as big of a dent in it (you know what I’m referring to – the dreaded ponytail dent!).
I first purchased a couple of Emi-Jay hairband sets about a year and a half ago after seeing their products on YouTube videos in the beauty guru community. I instantly replaced all of my store bought hair ties and began wearing these handmade ones with the exception of my very small hairbands that I use when I’m wearing a braid. Even though I wanted to use my new handmade hair ties for braids, they were simply too big for this type of hairdo with my hair. I started poking around drugstores for less expensive versions and eventually found some at Target made by Remington. Even though they cost less ($1.50 for a set of two as opposed to $11 plus S+H for a set of five from Emi-Jay), they are of lesser quality. You get what you pay for! The Remington hairbands are a similar concept, but I find they were not as soft as my Emi-Jay ones and don’t hold up as well in my hair. Plus, they aren’t sized large enough for wrist wear, which is part of the appeal of this kind of hairband. Even though they are smaller, the Remington hairbands are not the right size to secure my braid.
I was considering cutting up some of my hairbands to see if I could make smaller ones last December when Olivia, the owner and founder of Mane Message, sent an email my way. Her Mom had turned her onto my YouTube videos last fall and she decided to reach out to me to see if I’d be interested in trying her hairbands. I followed the link to her business webpage and saw that she carried a smaller size hairband. Just what I was looking for! Olivia graciously offered to send a selection of her products (including some regular, some mini, and a couple of headbands) to me, which she insisted I take as “a gift from a fan.”
I’ve been using Mane Message hair ties ever since (impeccable timing because my old Emi-Jay & Remington ones were in sore need of being replaced!) and absolutely love them! They are comparable in quality to Emi-Jay hairbands, but are less expensive ($7 for a set of five solid color hair ties as opposed to $11 for a similar package from Emi-Jay) and come in beautiful tie dye prints as well. Plus, Mane Message carries Mini Hair Ties, which are my personal favorite. A few loops secures my braid perfectly!
