Week(s) In Review (August 19 – September 1, 2013)

Welcome home, hello September, and back to work!  It was nice to take a little time off last week of filming, editing, and blogging (with the exception of vlogging for Vlogust on MHWL of course!), but I am excited to be back.  You know you truly love something when you miss it!  As much as I love Utah and am so grateful we were able to spend an entire month there this summer, coming home never felt so refreshing!  It seems fitting to be jumping back into blogging with a WIR update and posting on YouTube with my August Favorites on TBBB.  It’s almost fall and it’s time to get back in the swing of things!  Before I do so, I want to take some time to share with you my reflections on the last two weeks of our stay at the family abode in Utah.  If you’re confused as to what the deal is with us going to Utah, check out my last WIR post for an explanation.

Cuteness Overload

UntitledMy husband’s parents, Keith and Suzanne, joined us about ten days into our month-long stay in Utah.  Don’s sister, Emily, her husband, Dave, and their 3-month old baby girl, Grace, came out for the last two weeks, and Aunt Julie joined in for the last week.  It was so much fun to be able to live with the whole family for an extended period of time, especially with the newest addition to the brood.  Grace is such a sweetheart!  Literally every moment around her is cuteness overload.  She can’t not be cute!  It was a fun change for us to live with a baby in our midst.  Our dog Winnie definitely adjusted, as well, and is no longer so mopey around her.  I feel so lucky to have married into a family that I feel so at ease with, just as I do with my own kin.  We ate good food, shared lots of laughter, and enjoyed the beautiful mountains together.

Getting Out

Untitled2Since I was technically still working for the majority of our month-long visit, I found I wasn’t making the time to get out of the house much.  I ultimately decided to take the last week off of the majority of my work to enjoy our remaining time in Utah with the family.  This allowed for time to get out and do some fun things!  My MIL Suzanne, Aunt Julie, and I made our annual trek to Deer Valley for a ride up the chair lift for lunch and breathtaking views on the mountain (left photo set).  I was also fortunate to finally be able to make it to Swiss Days, an annual craft fair, at a local town.  I love craft fairs for the opportunity to see people’s creativity and talents at work.  We also made our usual pilgrimage up to Sundance for a hike around the grounds and a delicious lunch at The Foundry Grill.  As often as we visit Utah, I never tire of these sights.  You’d be surprised at all of the new discoveries you can make when you revisit your favorite places time and time again!  There are so many other sights I have yet to experience, as well, which allows opportunities for future adventures.

The Beauty of the Great Outdoors

Untitled1One of the things I love most about being at our family abode in Utah is the time I spend outside, in particular dawn, dusk, and nighttime.  It is so quiet and still first thing in the morning.  I like to sit out on the back patio with a cup of tea, my journal, and a book and steal a few moments of the total bliss that the mountain views and fresh air provides me.  Dusk is another favorite of mine in particular because of the variety of sunsets that grace our view out back every day.  There is so much space that it’s easy to see the sky and the beautiful clouds unobstructed by buildings or towers.  Nighttime is all about the stars.  We can see so much more of the night sky up at elevation without city and suburban lights interfering.  Sitting around a campfire with loved ones is the most relaxing way for me to spend a beautiful summer evening under the stars.

I treasure every day I was able to spend in my slice of paradise this summer.  I feel so blessed to be able to experience such a beautiful place and then come home to another one.  I can’t wait to return again this fall for a little R&R and to set up for the annual family holiday visit in late December.  Until then, I will keep the mountains fresh in my memory and enjoy all that my Chicago home has to offer.  It’s almost time to welcome in fall and all of the hustle and bustle that goes into gearing up for the holidays.  Life keeps moving just as the world keeps turning.  I hope you’re enjoying the ride just as I am, including all of its ups and downs and inside out moments.

  5. never commented before Jen, but I had to this time to say thank you for Vlogust. I’d never heard of it before, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

They were up around 4 p.m for me (I’m in England), so it was just in time for a cup of tea and a sit down. I looked forward to it every day. It has been my quiet time of the day, and I’m going to miss it. That said, I can imagine the amount of work involved and why you don’t/can’t do that every day ordinarily. But when you do …. hurrah!

  6. Merci chère Jen, de nous avoir partagé vos vacance et votre si belle famille.
De mon petit coin de Belgique, j’ai voyagé en voyant ses paysages fabuleux .
Bonne rentrée à Chicago et en avant pour les fêtes

  7. I enjoy Fall, it’s my favourite time of the year… Thank you for sharing your Fall with us. :)

  8. I think you should moderate the YouTube comments, at least for a little while. If you do, the few sour apples that are getting a rise out of posting negative things will get bored and go away. And it really is just a few. If you look at the thumbs up and down on your videos, you’ll see that most viewers do enjoy your videos. I do! I’m a housewife too and while I do have kids I’m *almost* an empty nester (at 44). My oldest has just left for college and my youngest is 13 and is either in school or at the dance studio, so I’m finding I have a lot more time to just…be a housewife. Your organizedlikejen videos inspire me to get things done around the house and your myhousewifelife videos give me a 10-20-30 minute or whatever escape from my own life. All this month I’ve looked forward to your videos. Usually I set up my phone on top of my makeup holder thingie (it’s a wood thing from PB Teen!) and watch one of your videos while I’m straightening my hair. lol On that note though, who says that Vlogust or Vlogtober or Volidays or Vlogwhatever has to be EVERY day? Do every other day. Or whatever day you darn well feel like it. You should never film because you feel like you have to. Only because you want to. Bottom line…it’s your channel, and you’re the queen of it. People are posting negative things because they for some reason get a rise out of it. Otherwise they wouldn’t do it. If you just squash that in the bud they will go away and find somewhere else to lurk. Whatever you decide just remember that most of us enjoy your videos. I love your closet by the way. That was the first video I saw of yours, and you had me at the closet. :)

Thanks for sharing…Fall is one of my favorite times of the year and it will be fun to watch you as you share your love of this season as well. Hugs coming your way!

  10. I just watched your most recent vlog [the last of the Vlogust ones], & I just wanted to let you know that I LOVE your vlogs. I know you mentioned that you feel like sometimes you don’t know what to vlog about, especially when you’re not on vacation or doing something exciting, but my favorite ones are your ‘everyday’ vlogs. Your sharing of your daily routines really helped to inspire me to get more done each day. I just wanted to give you some input, since you mentioned wanting opinions in regard to vlogging. Thank you for sharing & inspiring!

Thank you for Vlogust! I love it when you film in Utah & when your family time is shared so it was particularly awesome :)
To be honest though I had major stress through the first part of the month & I found myself saying “At least you have Vlogust”… true story.
There’s no place like home though, enjoy it! Looking forward to future vlogs, take care :)

  12. Loved the last part: ”Life keeps moving just as the world keeps turning. I hope you’re enjoying the ride just as I am, including all of its ups and downs and inside out moments”.

Thank you so much for sharing all that you do with us. You definitely make me feel like I’m one of your friends. Enjoy the arrival of fall, it’s the best season! ;)

  13. Hi Jen,

I’m a relatively new “Organized Jen” follower and I’m so happy to have found you! I’m a busy grad student and often feel bogged down by everything that comes along with that, but your videos inspire me to get organized, have fun, and spend time with the people I love. Your positive attitude is such a good reminder to enjoy the little things and approach every day with optimism :)

I loved Vlogust – even days you thought were “boring” were fun to watch! I was surprised by all the negative comments on some of the videos but I guess that’s part of the job. Hope you don’t let them get you down and you keep sharing!

  14. Hi Jen,

So appreciated “everything” you did for us while in UT. You went above and beyond the call of duty, and I for one am so grateful to you for filming everyday of the month; what a feat and such an amazing accomplishment. I admire you so much girly, and am so glad that I stumbled across Organized LIke Jen when looking for organization tips. You have added something to my life, and for that I feel extremely blessed and so fortunate to have found you. Thank you again for all that you do for us.

P.S. Please thank Don for me as well as your extended family, for allowing us to share your life and sometimes a bit of theirs.

  15. What a great post PERFECT ending to a wonderful stay in Utah. Thank you so much for taking us along on your journey in Utah. It was great to see all the beautiful sites, family, friends and good food. You have definitely have inspired me to bring back some of the traditions back and make time for family, because that is important. Sometime work gets in the way and it shouldn’t.

Thank you Jen, Don and your family for sharing with us!! Have a wonderful September month!!!

  16. What a wonderful month in Utah! Thanks for sharing it with us. You know I have enjoyed your videos since almost the beginning of your YT journey. I just hope you don’t feel pressured into doing Vlogtober or Vlogidays. We all know it is a huge time commitment during the busiest time of the year. You vlog pretty regularly as it is. There will be so many fun opportunities to vlog with all the seasonal decorating, party planning, baking and family functions without the “must film everyday” pressure hanging over your head.

If you have the inclination to film, great! You know we’ll LOVE whatever you share. But if things are too hectic and crazy, just skip a day or two or three… perhaps this way you won’t feel you disappointed us or yourself or feel the need to apologize for not filming every single, solitary day. I vote to film when you’re inspired and when it’s convenient for your schedule… if that’s once or twice a week or even four or five times a week, wonderful. And, if it actually turns out to be every single day, then that’s just a fantastic bonus for us! You know we’ll be thrilled with whatever makes your life more enjoyable and what allows you to fully participate in all of life’s festivities. I sincerely want this journey to continue to be a pleasure and never become a “should” or “must” or “have to” experience, because that can easily suck the fun right out of it for you… and ultimately for us as well.

Thanks again for sharing the beauty of Utah, you and your lovely family with us during Vlogust. It’s always a pleasure to see the love of family and friends. Please know that you and your efforts are appreciated. (((Big Squeezes)))

Hi Jen. Will you be reviewing your In a Pikle organizer you got at Swiss Days? You mentioned that you were going to show it to us in your vlog, but I think you forgot. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it :)

    • OrganizedJen says:

I didn’t show it in the vlog because I wanted to do a true first impressions blog post. That will be up sometime in the next few eeeks :)

  18. Jen,
How is your grandmother feeling? Did you get a chance to visit with her? I bet she was so happy to see you guys. We are sending wishes for a quick recovery.
